<2017.11> The Spirit, the Soul and the Flesh According to the Bible

45th International Bible Conference
July 28, 2013
The Spirit, the Soul and the Flesh, and the Blood that Contains LifeWe all have certain preconceived ideas, and when we look at the Bible with these preconceptions, we distinguish between the flesh as the outer layer of the body, the soul as our thoughts and the spirit as the conscience within us. Also, when we explain the Bible to people who are unfamiliar with it, we say that man was created in the image of God who is a trinity, and therefore we have flesh, soul and spirit. We distinguish between these three as we speak. In First Thessalonians it says, “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (5:23). This verse clearly affirms these three attributes of man. Yet, it is not always easy to distinguish between the spirit, the soul and the flesh when talking about certain matters. You can open the Bible and tell someone that we have a spirit, a soul and a body, and they may respond saying, “Oh. I see.” But that will be the extent of the person’s understanding; he will not truly understand it. The ability to consider and distinguish clearly between these three does not stem from our own knowledge or studies. The thoughts that arise within us from studying philosophy, medicine or history and receiving academic degrees or something similar will not give us the ability to make clear distinctions between matters of the spirit, the soul and the flesh. As long as we are confined within our physical bodies, it is difficult for us to make these distinctions unless we are given the ability to do so. It is through the power that comes from God that we are able to make such distinctions.
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  Hebrews 4:12
The Bible tells us the word of God is living and powerful. It also says that it is sharper than any two-edged sword—not just a knife with a single blade such as you will find in a kitchen—and so it has the power to pierce even to the division of soul, spirit and flesh. If you think about yourself, you will see that it is impossible for you to differentiate between what is going on within your flesh, your thoughts and your spirit if you do not reflect upon these through the Bible. This is truth and the laws of creation that appear in the Bible.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.  Genesis 1:1-5
In this passage we can see that at the same time that the light appeared, God made a division. It says that He “divided the light from the darkness.” The earth was already turning on its axis at that point in time. Activity and an image of life had already begun and the division of light and darkness testified of this. Similarly, when the seed of God’s word falls into the spirit of an individual, it gives light to the spirit. This light does not come and go; it enters the individual and stays, just as it says in this passage: “‘Let there be light’; and there was light.” It is from this moment onwards that our lives change. We commonly refer to this life of coming to discover ourselves within this light as a Christian life of faith. As the word lives and is active within the individual and is teaching him, there begins to arise within him the power to be able to have a certain vague understanding of the matters of the flesh, the thoughts and the conscience within the inner man. You may be able to say to someone who does not know this truth, “You have to do this because you have a soul, a spirit and flesh,” but you will not be able to bring them to understand all this. Only the word of God can bring a person to understand. In Amos chapter 8 verse 11, it says, “‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord God, ‘that I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.’” This verse is talking about the relationship between the physical body and the inner man. Also, in Leviticus chapter 17 verse 11, it says, “For the life of the flesh is in the blood.” It is not necessary for us to think that now we are saved we are able to distinguish between the soul, the spirit and the flesh and judge accordingly. Indeed, we are not able to make such judgments. Before you start taking into consideration the fact that you have been saved for a year, twenty years or thirty years, you first need to stand before the Bible as an individual who has been created by the hand of God. It is in this situation that we come to hear the words, “the life of the flesh is in the blood.” These words are not asking when we received salvation, whether we have received forgiveness for our sins, or whether we have come to realize the truth; they are simply telling us that the life of the flesh is in the blood. When the earth was without form and void, God said, “Let there be light,” and at the same time the light began to be divided from the darkness. God called this the first day. The first day had begun. Many scholars say the earth and the universe are billions of years old. Yet, the Bible describes the first day clearly as being the day on which everything began. Similarly, there was a day when Adam began to exist. In the course of the process of the creation, on the sixth day God gathered together some of the dust of the earth and with it, in other words, with the elements of the soil, He formed man. In Genesis chapter 2 it says that God breathed into the man’s nostrils the breath of life and the man became a living being. Let’s think about this carefully. The Bible says that when God breathed the breath of life into Adam’s nostrils, Adam became a living being. It also says that the life of the flesh is in the blood. When the earth was without form and void, God said, “Let there be light,” and the light shone. This light was good in God’s eyes and with this light, God separated the night and the day. Similarly, there was a moment when the life of God also shone on man who was formed of the dust of the ground and made up of its elements. It was then that the man would have stood up breathing as he did so. It was in relation to this that Moses later wrote, “the life of the flesh is in the blood.” Our blood holds on to the life within us. It is not for us to be concerned here about the spirit, soul and flesh. Since the blood has been entrusted with God’s breath of life, it is upholding the life of our flesh and at the same time it acts as a glue that keeps our spirits and souls attached to our bodies. The blood is the feature of the body that God uses to enable the spirit, the soul and the body to move as one. If a person loses three to four cups of blood, he will begin to lose consciousness, and if he loses just a few liters of blood he will die. When we stand as individuals before the words of the Bible and think deeply about the verse that says, “the life of the flesh is in the blood,” we can see that God has attached life to our blood. This life upholds our bodies and at the same time, it has the power to uphold our spirits and our souls which go hand-in-hand with our bodies. In the letter to the Romans in the New Testament, however, it talks about a person’s struggles with his inner man. (see 7:21-25) A person lives in this world in the flesh that has been formed on the basis of the words, “the life of the flesh is in the blood,” and then at a certain moment that person receives life once again through the words of the Bible. Adam sinned by eating of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and since we were born as descendants of that sinner, we live our lives committing sins until we are implanted with new life. Then once we have received this new life through the words of the Bible, our spirits receive new life through the blood of Jesus just as our blood contains the life of the flesh. At first, we lead our lives unable to distinguish between matters of the flesh and those of the spirit, just as the earth was “without form and void,” but from the moment something new enters our spirits we come to see as each day passes that we have an inner and an outer man. This is neither the law nor religion; it is the truth. When this experience begins within you, the power arises within you to be able to withstand the thoughts that tempt you to live according to the flesh, a power that enables you to live according to God’s word. You are able to see these two people within you. As you come to know these things one by one, you also come to understand the nature of the flesh and that of the spirit. If you wanted to teach this to someone who is ignorant of such matters and tried doing it by rote as you might teach that 1 plus 1 equals 2, that person would not be able to grasp what it means; he would simply listen and know what you have said. The Bible tells us that this is a matter that can only be unraveled through the word of God that is living and powerful. It is such that it can only be known by those who have received the life of God. This is why Christians who have been implanted with the life of God need to think about this a little more deeply.
The Power of the BloodMan forsook Jesus in return for money. For thirty pieces of silver, man drove Jesus to the cross. We are living our lives in this world having inherited the blood of Adam. Yet, new life starts within the heart of an individual the moment he considers through the Bible the blood of Jesus which He shed for that person’s sins, having come to this world with no connection to sin. The reason we talk about tithes is that the Bible shows us how to turn our heart towards God and how to look to God without shame. Adam became a sinner when he infringed on what belongs to God, and we became sinners through Adam, but we have escaped from our consciences and the boundaries that were infringed upon. So now as we lead our lives, we learn through the Bible more and more about what belongs to God. I am not saying that those who are not saved should not
