<2012.08> God's Glory, which He Reveals through Israel's Failure

2010 European Bible Conference
This is an edited version of the lecture titled, "35th European Bible Conference" which was preached on October 12th, 2010 Evening
Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, "Here I am.' If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness.   (Isaiah:58 8-9)
God's glory, revealed through the creationLast time, we studied the issue of eating, the issue of drinking, and the issue of what we do, and the requirement was that we do it to the glory of God. We studied what the glory of God is, and we saw in the Old Testament that the glory of God already existed. The glory of God is not something that is created when we do certain things and disappears when we do wrong; rather, it is God's power and Godhead, which existed before eternity and does exist for eternity. That power of God has been revealed to man, in accordance with the way that God chose. It is not revealed haphazardly. When we read Exodus and Numbers, we can see the reason and the purpose for which the glory of God is revealed. You may think that the events from about 3,500 years ago are remote from today's reality and that they are irrelevant to us; however, it is through those passages that we come to realize that the living God reveals His glory in the same manner today. The Bible says, "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse" (Romans 1:20). We will read Psalm 104.
Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great: You are clothed with honor and majesty, Who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, Who stretch out the heavens like a curtain. He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters, Who makes the clouds His chariot, Who walks on the wings of the wind, Who makes His angels spirits, His ministers a flame of fire. You who laid the foundations of the earth, So that it should not be moved forever, You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters stood above the mountains. At Your rebuke they fled; At the voice of Your thunder they hastened away. They went up over the mountains; They went down into the valleys, To the place which You founded for them. You have set a boundary that they may not pass over, That they may not return to cover the earth. He sends the springs into the valleys, They flow among the hills. They give drink to every beast of the field; The wild donkeys quench their thirst. By them the birds of the heavens have their home; They sing among the branches. He waters the hills from His upper chambers; The earth is satisfied with the fruit of Your works. He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, And vegetation for the service of man, That he may bring forth food from the earth, And wine that makes glad the heart of man, Oil to make his face shine, And bread which strengthens man's heart. The trees of the LORD are full of sap, The cedars of Lebanon which He planted, Where the birds make their nests; The stork has her home in the fir trees. The high hills are for the wild goats; The cliffs are a refuge for the rock badgers. He appointed the moon for seasons; The sun knows its going down. You make darkness, and it is night, In which all the beasts of the forest creep about. The young lions roar after their prey, And seek their food from God. When the sun rises, they gather together And lie down in their dens. Man goes out to his work And to his labor until the evening. O LORD, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions -- This great and wide sea, In which are innumerable teeming things, Living things both small and great. There the ships sail about; There is that Leviathan Which You have made to play there. These all wait for You, That You may give them their food in due season. What You give them they gather in; You open Your hand, they are filled with good. You hide Your face, they are troubled; You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; And You renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the LORD endure forever; May the LORD rejoice in His works. He looks on the earth, and it trembles; He touches the hills, and they smoke. I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. May my meditation be sweet to Him; I will be glad in the LORD. May sinners be consumed from the earth, And the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, O my soul! Praise the LORD!
This is a very beautiful poem. It describes what we often see, feel, and know in this world, and then it says, "May the glory of the LORD endure forever." In other words, it is saying that God reveals His glory in this world through His creation. When we study Hebrews, we come to realize that there was the world that unfolded before the throne of God, before this world, in which we live, existed, and that the world on this earth was modeled after that world. As such, we are living in the creation, which reveals the glory of God, but most people in this world do not recognize the glory of God through the creation, and they make the mistake of thinking that it came about spontaneously.Imagine that there are screws, bolts, barrels of gas, a handle, and other parts of a car scattered on a field. How many earthquakes would it take for those parts to be assembled spontaneously to become a car? It can never happen spontaneously. Such is the case for a car, so how about the human body? The nervous system or the blood vessels in the human body are even more exquisite than the many wires in a car. People put down roads for cars, so could the road for the blood in the human body _ that is, the blood vessels _ have come about spontaneously? As such, the creation that God created testifies that God is living. The creation is the masterpiece that speaks for the tremendous power of the invisible God, His authority, and His Godhead. It is the glory of God in its greater sense. It is something that all of mankind that has been born into this world and is living in this world can sense. Through the creation, we come to find the glory of God, God the Creator.
The issue of eating while living in the wilderness for 40 yearsIn the same manner, the glory of God, who takes responsibility for my spirit as an individual and is able to resolve the problem of the mankind, has been revealed in this world in a very unique way. We need binoculars to see something at a distance. We cannot see it well with our eyes. As such, the glory of God, the power of God _ which takes the responsibility of the spirit of us individuals _ is not something that we can see just by imagining it or by using various methods in order to get close to God. The glory of God can enter the eyes of your heart only through a certain path. This is how God managed the history of the people of Israel. The glory of God appears through the various events that appear, beginning in Exodus. In Genesis, there is no mention of the glory of the Lord. The glory of the Lord is mentioned for the first time in Exodus. When the Israelites complained, saying that they were happier in Egypt when they ate meat and bread, Moses mentioned the words, "the glory of the LORD" for the first time.Exodus chapter 16 verse 2.
Then the whole congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. And the children of Israel said to them, "Oh, that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger." Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not. And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily." Then Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, "At evening you shall know that the LORD has brought you out of the land of Egypt. And in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD; for He hears your complaints against the LORD. But what are we, that you complain against us?" Also Moses said, "This shall be seen when the LORD gives you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to the full; for the LORD hears your complaints which you make against Him. And what are we? Your complaints are not against us but against the LORD." Then Moses spoke to Aaron, "Say to all the congregation of the children of Israel, "Come near before the LORD, for He has heard your complaints.'" Now it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.  (verses 2-10)
When the glory of the Lord appeared for the first time, it was because of the issue of eating. It was because of the issue of eating that mankind came to disobey God's words _ that is, because of the eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In addition what was the fate of the Canaanites who had originally inhabited the land of Canaan, where the Israelites entered and lived? When Ham, a son of Noah, saw his father drunk and naked, revealing his lower body, he went and told his brothers. It was because of this incident that Canaan, a son of Ham, came to be cursed. The fate of two people, Esau and Jacob, was divided because of red stew, and Jacob gave food to Isaac and received the blessing. It was after these events that had to do with the issue of eating that he came to live as God's chosen people. As the history of Israel went on, these events were recorded in the Bible. When the Israelites came out into the wilderness under the leadership of Moses, another problem that had to do with eating took place. When the Israelites complained because of the issue of eating, God did not punish them, but instead gave them food first.
They looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. (Exodus 16:10)
In an image that is somewhat different from the passages that we have seen in the Bible until now, God comes closer to people. How was it before then? When Adam sinned, God Himself walked in the garden, looking for Adam. He Himself killed an animal, made tunics of skin, and clothed him. When Abraham's nephew Lot was taken captive, Abraham went to war in order to save Lot, came back, and paid a tithe to a mysterious character called Melchizedek. Before Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, God Himself appeared before Abraham. However, at a time when the nation, which has been chosen to fulfill God's will, is being established as a character, the way God appears to people changes a little. This is what happens when Moses begins to write down the commandments that he received from God.
So it was that quails came up at evening and covered the camp, and in the morning the dew lay all around the camp. And when the layer of dew lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness, was a small round substance, as fine as frost on the ground. (Exodus 16:13-14)
What is this? This is the manna.
Then the children of Israel did so and gathered, some more, some less. So when they measured it by omers, he who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack. Every man had gathered according to each one's need. And Moses said, "Let no one leave any of it till morning." Notwithstanding they did not heed Moses. But some of them left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. (Exodus 16:17-20)
God's commandment was, "Let no one leave any of it till morning," but the Israelites could not trust in those words, took some more of it, left part of it, and the next day, it rotted and stank. Strangely, though, on the six day, the day before the Sabbath, it was fine to gather twice as much and keep it until the next day. When we consider such a passage in the Bible and the words, "whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do" (1 Corinthians 10:31), we come to reflect on our own lives. We reflect on whether or not we are living like this. The Bible says, "Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died" (Romans 14:15). We may refer to each other as "Brother" or "Sister" but there are people that do not look after brothers and sisters, and are miserly to God but generous to themselves. The Bible warns such people. This is also a warning to the people who strictly protect themselves, but are miserly in their relationship with God.
40 years' testing in the wilderness and 40 days' temptions of JesusThe Israelites had to gather food every day. On the sixth day, however, they could collect twice as much and the food did not rot the next day. A deep meaning of the Sabbath day is hidden in this.
And the house of Israel called its name Manna. And it was like white coriander seed, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. Then Moses said, "This is the thing which the LORD has commanded: "Fill an omer with it, to be kept for your generations, that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.'" And Moses said to Aaron, "Take a pot and put an omer of manna in it, and lay it up before the LORD, to be kept for your generations." As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept. And the children of Israel ate manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. (Exodus 16:31-35)
As the tabernacle was moved, three objects were in the ark of the covenant: Aaron's rod that budded, the tablets of the covenant, and the pot that had the manna.Moses said to the Israelites, "And in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD", and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. Then food came down from the sky. God said to put the manna in a pot and put it in the ark of the covenant. The three objects in the ark of the covenant were put in the ark, clearly as a shadow of Jesus. These objects, which came from the incidents that took place to reveal the glory of God, were chosen and put in the ark. They were not randomly ch
