<2009.08> European Young Adult Meeting in Scotland

May 29th - June 1st, 2009 Angel Lin | UK I Got Saved in ScotlandI first heard about the Gospel from my school friend, Hyerim, three years ago, and got saved in July of that year, after watching the videos and receiving counselling. At that time, the Scottish moim consisted only of one family and one other sister. During the following year, I occasionally visited the moim house. It was not on a regular basis, and I did not listen to or watch any sermons with the other brothers and sisters. I come from a Taiwanese family with complicated religious backgrounds, so I was always afraid to bring up the subject with my parents. My parents were also quite strict about what I do in my spare time, and being only in secondary school at the time, I had very little freedom to go out and meet friends, never mind going to the moim house. About a year after my salvation, I attended a small conference in Sweden with Hyerim. There, I met brothers and sisters from abroad for the first time, and everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. It was also in Sweden that I experienced for the first time, the joys of working together in the moim, even if it was just dishwashing. Sweden holds many precious memories for me, including the food, the scenery and my baptism. Afterwards, Hyerim and I moved from Glasgow to Edinburgh, to attend university. At the same time, a sister came from Korea to study in Edinburgh, so we became two local moims. Having moved out of my parents’house, I had more freedom, so I was able to go to the moim house in Glasgow more regularly. In the Scottish moim, we had weekly Sunday meetings, to watch sermons and have fellowship. Every Tuesday, Hyerim and I also tried to have online meetings with brothers and sisters from Germany, to do the Education Program. It was also during this year that I felt increasing difficulty being the only non-Korean in the Scottish moim. Even though I had started learning Korean from Hyerim, there were still times that I would feel slightly excluded, and increasingly I felt the importance of language, for communication and thus, fellowship. Later on, when I was in Germany, I was the only person who could speak neither Korean nor German, and I could not help but feel that I was a burden for the people who were translating for me, especially when the meetings carried on late into the early morning. People told me that I did not have to feel that way, but even now, I am very grateful to the sisters from Germany. Then last year, a Chinese sister, Yan, was saved, and I was glad to be able to converse with her in my mother tongue. It was also comforting to have someone close by who had not been born into the moim. I finally felt that there was someone with whom I could share my troubles about evangelising my family. Another of our friends from secondary school was saved this year. She is Scottish, but of Hong Kong descent. Thus, the Scottish moim now consists of one brother, seven sisters and two. Preparing for the Youth European MeetingLast year while I was in Germany for the General Meeting, in March, I met a sister who told me of a meeting that was held in Scotland, a long time ago. She then suggested that we have another meeting like that, so about eight months later, after returning from the European Conference, those of us in the Scottish moim were really motivated to do something, and we decided that we wanted to have a meeting here in Scotland. We thought it would be like the one many years ago - small but with good fellowship. And so, finally, at the end of February this year, we discussed seriously about what we wanted to achieve with this meeting. We made up a list of possible topics and then commenced discussions with EMG Europe. After lengthy discussions, we decided to focus on three main topics at this meeting: 1. Health Education and Exercises2. Translation3. Tithes and Donations After agreeing upon the direction of the meeting, the next thing we had to do was to confirm the dates. We initially thought of having the meeting during the Pentecost weekend, because we were aware that there was a holiday in Germany. However, there were already talks of a Bible Seminar for that weekend, so we were quite fortunate that we were able to have the meeting in the end. Having set the dates, the Scottish moim put all their energy into searching for a suitable venue. Since we expected the majority of young adults to be coming from Germany, we checked for flight tickets from Germany to Scotland, and discovered that Edinburgh was more accessible than Glasgow by air, so we decided to have the meeting near Edinburgh, even though the Scottish moim house is in Glasgow.
