Nelly Friedensburg | Germany
I was saved on October 25th, 2012. This search for God was a good but also hard time for me and now I’m really happy that I’m saved.
My name is Nelly Friedensburg. I grew up in Freiburg, south-western part of Germany, and when I was 18 years old I moved to Dusseldorf to get a nurse training necessary.
In my childhood, My mother sometimes read the children’s Bible for my brother, my sister and me. The stories about Jesus were always like a nice good-night-story for me. So I just knew there is a God.
My paternal grandfather was an Ambassador but also a pastor, so he baptized my sister and me. He always insisted that we attend church on Sundays, but this was not a nice situation for me. Being a very dominant and self-righteous man, he was always the loudest man in the church while singing or praying. During my confirmation lessons I learned more about the Bible, but I was more interested in being together with my friends and less in knowing the Bible. My grandfather went to my Pastor and tried to change my Bible verse, which has been chosen for our confirmation ceremony, without asking me. He did a lot of other things and as he was for me some kind of representative of the protestant church, so I felt that Christianity and the Bible are not important for me anymore.
From that day on I thought, there is a higher Power, but there was no difference to me if it was called God, Allah, Buddha or even a holy turtle. I didn’t think it could be defined so narrowly. In a certain way I believed in heaven and hell, but I never worried that I would go to hell, because that was a place where only really bad people ended up, like murderers or child abusers.
When I met my boyfriend, Ali, I learned a little about Islam. But Ali did not know much about his own religion and he didn’t practice it, so my knowledge was very superficial. But for me God was never hard and strict as the Muslims pictured Him.
